The Denver Zoo has come up with a very interesting idea to not only produce electricity but also reduce an estimated 1.5 million pounds of garbage and waste each year. The idea is what I'm calling Poo Power.
The Zoo purchased a richshaw from Thailand and staff modified it to run on gasified pellets consisting of animal dung and human waste/garbage. The end result, a poo powered rickshaw used to show off how the zoo is going green and reducing energy costs.
They are also planing to power a upcoming elephant exhibit using the same technology. The poo pellets will also be used to power the exhibit and eventually turn up to 90% of their waste directly into energy.
The concept is very interesting and can be used anywhere copious amounts of animal poo can be found. For more information visit the Denver Zoo's website here.
