I came across a very interesting article the other day. In it was the conceptual design for a rooftop aquaponics dome. As I am currently investigating which greenhouse to purchase/build, this immediately caught my attention. The "Globe (Hedron)" is a joint effort from urban farmers AG and designer Antonio Scarponi from Conceptual Devices, and is an idea which will hopefully address a growing food shortage problem around the world.
I won't go into too much detail but basically how it works is the waste from the fish (including their foods) builds up in the water just like in your aquarium at home, and is then channeled to plants within the dome. The plants gobble up the waste, cleaning the water at the same time. In theory a aquaponic dome such as the "Globe" could feed a family of 4 all year long, providing a bounty of fish and veggies. Currently Urban farmers are doing some fund raising and are looking for $15K to bring this dome from concept to prototype.
While some believe placing these domes on rooftops may be more costly than attempting to convert existing structures on the ground, the idea itself is sound and I'm hoping to see these aquaponic domes on the market in the near future.
